Talking to CRAs

Through the initial round of interviews, we learned:

  1. Sites have a solid Wi-Fi connection — we thought offline mode could be crucial depending on location, but turns out that wasn’t a felt need

  2. CRAs frequently travel between clinical trial sites & home

  3. They need a more efficient way to manage schedule, logistics, timesheets, and expenses

When our client reached out to our team to create a mobile tool to support CRAs, their needs weren’t clear.

Key Pain Points

SCHEDULING FATIGUE

A lot of time spent scheduling site visits and travel engagements

HIDDEN OVERTIME

Often inputting collected data at their hotels after site visits

TRACKING BURDEN

Slow and manual process for data, timesheet, and expenses

Gaining Time Back

We designed an app that consolidates data capture, task tracking, timesheet entries, visit scheduling, and travel booking in one place, minimizing the frustration and time lost outside of work hours.

By conducting usability testing with CRAs using prototypes on a rapid user testing platform called Maze, we evaluated the relevance, discoverability, and usability of the features.

User Testing Missions

Mission 4 — Book Travel
  • 75% Completion Rate

Highlight: This process is “quicker” than their current one.

  • 100% Completion Rate

Highlight: Timesheet function would save time, especially if it can pull from their schedule.

  • 100% Completion Rate

Highlight: “I love that the visits are preplanned out based on our monitoring frequency…”

  • 100% Completion Rate | 5.3% Misclick Rate

Highlight: Booking seems easy. One user would like a quick one-click rebooking solution.

Submitting Expenses Made Easy

Xrim like I said is a real struggle

there’s so much after-hours admin work

Reflection

User Input > Saving Time

With tight deadlines at work, it’s easy to bypass stakeholders’ thoughts/feedback. Evidently, it was challenging to schedule interviews with CRAs, as most of them have busy schedules. However, the effort was worth it as we made critical additions to the app and removed what was unnecessary.

Research at the Core

Performing research for this project was essential to understanding the CRAs greatest needs and to knowing how to incorporate AI where it made the most sense.
