Scalable Design Solution
Our team encountered short turnarounds and inconsistency across projects, such as button sizes, icons, spacing, color, and more, often causing roadblocks during the development and testing phases.
To solve the time and consistency problem, my team created a scalable library, utilizing components and designing for the smallest screen dimensions that resize to fit a variety of mobile brands/models.
Components
When building the components, we used a monochromatic color scheme to create a template that could be easily adjusted to match the client’s branding.

Schedule Easily
Based on the availability of the clinical staff, the patients are able to schedule, reschedule, and start appointments easily at any time of day without having to go on site or contact the staff during business hours.

The Impact
The app enables patients to participate in the BYOD program using their own devices rather than relying on devices provided by the clinical site. This was crucial during the global pandemic when COVID-19 made it impossible for patients to visit clinical trial sites in person to complete questionnaires.
This project had a significant impact on our design process as it allowed us to create industry-quality designs in shorter amounts of time that clients were satisfied with.
Decrease in Hours Spent
Our curated blueprint app reduced the required time to set up new projects from 16 hours to 4 hours

Work Smarter, Not Harder
The data and my experience show that spending more time and effort on a product does not equate to improved quality of a product or experience. I learned a valuable lesson about how much time I can save as a designer by setting up a standard design and process for myself and others to follow.
Don’t Settle for What Works
Each patient app we designed was unique to the clinical trials and catered to the client and patients’ needs. However, the inconsistency that resulted caused a lot of confusion among developers and QA teams. This app was a worthwhile investment, streamlining our source of truth and saving the team valuable time.
