COVID-19: A Sudden Social Vacuum
This project was born when COVID-19 hit worldwide and quarantine was mandated. Many people lost their jobs and felt disconnected from others.
With a team of other designers, we interviewed people with different backgrounds to find common challenges we could practically address.
Interviews, empathy exercises, and affinity mapping revealed a sudden vacuum in the social environment for employees who transitioned to full-time remote work, limiting connection and reducing motivation to be productive.
Virtuality is draining
Fluctuating productivity
People miss the informal socio-physical interactions
Lack of verbal and body cues
Hard to communicate with coworkers
